What It Takes To Succeed At Container Gardening

By aldensolis11 23 Nov 2011 10:41 AM Tag: default 0 comments, leave your own!

When your home does not allow for a full sized garden; you may choose container gardening as the trendy alternative. Given their reduced size, container gardens will not consume as much of your time. Container gardening can be a rewarding experience; below we will offer some valuable ideas on how to make this happen for you.

The first thing to think about is what sorts of containers are available for container gardening and which ones would suit you best. You can choose any number of a variety of containers; like buckets, cans or simple flower pots. If you opt for wood containers, make sure that the wood is chemical free and bear in mind that it is a material that will eventually rot. You also need to remember to make sure there is sufficient drainage; drilling holes will alleviate this issue. Knowing that light colors have less of a tendency to retain undesirable heat that could be too hard on your plants; you may want to stay away from using dark colored containers. The sizes of your containers will hinge on the size of the plants you will be putting in them. You need to provide enough room for your plants, whatever you decide on growing; with sufficient area to flourish in.

Indoor container gardening is another valuable option. Container gardening would be perfect for folks who have very little outside living space or have an over abundant home with lots of room. If you need to place your plants inside the house they will do fine, but if you have a balcony or a patio to put them on that would be even better.

Your plants require a certain amount of light; if you are unable to supply that with natural sunlight, you can use grow lights instead. Herbs are one of the best things to grow indoors, and this will also give you easy access to them when you're cooking. There are many different vegetables that will also do well indoors; like salad veggies.

You have to consider the lighting of your container garden, whether it's indoors or outdoors. Ideally, your plants should receive sunlight during the day. When you are not able to give your plants the necessary light via the sun; it will be necessary to provide it in some other way. You can find grow lights that will help by generating heat much like the heat generated by the sun. When your plants are not exposed to direct sunlight; you can use these to compensate for the loss. The next best thing would be a bright bulb of 150 watts that's kept on the plants during the day.

Container gardening is sure to get more popular as more people are wanting to grow their own vegetables herbs and plants. Although we would like to invest in a good sized garden; it would invariably take a lot of time and space that we do not necessarily have. We may all like to have and maintain a full sized garden; even though a container garden takes time, it will be time easily given.
